How SPF, DKIM and DMARC work – Technical basis

SPF (Sender Policy Framework)

SPF is a DNS record that lists the IP addresses of servers allowed to send mail on behalf of the domain. The receiving server checks whether the email was sent from an allowed IP. If not, the email may be rejected or marked as spam.

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)

DKIM adds a cryptographic signature to the email. Using a public key stored in DNS, the recipient verifies the authenticity of the email and its contents (whether it has been modified en route). This is an important element of validation.

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance)

DMARC combines SPF and DKIM and sets clear processing rules:

• p=none — monitoring, but not blocking.
• p=quarantine — suspicious emails are sent to spam.
• p=reject — completely rejected.

DMARC also provides reporting (aggregate and forensic), allowing the domain owner to track who is trying to send email on behalf of their domain.
